The Power Of Simplicity
You may notice with my summer post, there's a giant increase in my shares around nature. These days, I spend a large chunk of time in the northern panhandle of Idaho. Most people will share that all they know about Idaho is that our potatoes are grown there. This part of the state is pristine and rich, and over the years my family has learned to appreciate its beauty, expansiveness, and refreshing simplicity. It's an opportunity to be fully immersed in nature's healing qualities, absorbing and sharing every little bit that I can. However, no matter where we are, there's an opportunity to be present in the power of nature's simplicity. So what about nature leaves us feeling nurtured and takes us back to basics in the most healing of ways?
Amid our ordinary lives, filled with routines, responsibilities, social media, and rushing about, we often overlook the simple yet profound healing power of being in nature. Nature's beauty and healing lies in its simplicity. You don't need to climb mountains or venture into remote forests to experience its healing effects. Often, the smallest and simplest interactions with nature can bring about the most profound sense of shift into peace and renewal. It reminds us of our interconnectedness to something bigger and comforts us in its natural simplicity bringing about harmony and balance.
For many of us, seeking solace in nature may seem like a luxury reserved for the adventurous or the free-spirited. However, taking ourselves into nature in healing ways is not only accessible but also profoundly transformative, even in the most ordinary everyday ways.
The healing power of simplicity in nature lies in its ability to ground us in the present moment. The power of this simplicity is intertwined with nature's interconnected expansiveness, reminding us of our place within a larger ecosystem. It takes us out of our smallness and distraction by embracing both the simplicity and vastness of the natural world. We find comfort and renewal, reconnecting with our inner peace within the greater tapestry of life. Whether it's listening to the gentle rustling of leaves, the steady rhythm of ocean waves, or the vibrant colors of a sunset, these simple natural experiences can calm our minds and rejuvenate our spirits. There is an innate harmony and balance occurring all around us. By embracing nature's simplicity, we are reminded of and reconnect with "all there is," finding comfort in the beauty of the vast ordinary.
How do I Start?
1. Make it a habit: Start with what's available to you. A walk in your neighborhood park, sitting by a local pond, looking out at the sky, or even tending to a small garden can be your gateway to nature's healing embrace. Creating moments of peace In our everyday hustle can be challenging, and nature invites us to slow down, breathe deeply, and find moments of peace amidst the chaos. Set aside a few minutes each day to step outside, even if it's just to your backyard or balcony. Take deep breaths, listen to the sounds around you, and let your mind rest, just be. These brief moments can create a ripple effect of calm throughout your day.
2. Embrace the ordinary: We often believe healing requires extraordinary efforts or dramatic changes. However, consistency and nature teaches us that healing can be found in the most ordinary of moments, such as watching the sunrise, feeling the grass under our feet, or listening to or inhaling the smell of the rain. Make it a habit to notice the ordinary wonders of nature. Keep a journal or photograph your observations of these moments. Reflecting on these simple moments can help you appreciate the beauty in everyday life.
3. Nature as a Companion: For many of us, nature can become a silent companion, I know it is for me, by offering solace without words and comfort without demands. This companionship can be particularly healing when we feel overwhelmed or isolated. When feeling stressed or lonely, take a walk in nature. Allow yourself to be fully present and open to the experience. Notice how nature's surroundings and presence can offer a sense of companionship and grounding.
4. The therapeutic act of gardening: Gardening is a beautiful way to bring nature into daily life. Nurturing plants and watching them grow can be incredibly therapeutic, providing a sense of accomplishment and connection to the Earth. Start a small garden, even just a few potted plants or house plants. Choose plants that are easy to care for and observe how they thrive under your care. Experiment with different plants and gardening techniques. Enjoy the process and the satisfaction of nurturing life.
5. Connecting with the seasons: I love this one because each season offers such variety. Nature's cycles and seasons offer a powerful reminder of the ebb and flow of life. Embracing that life is always changing can help us find balance and acceptance in our own lives. Take note of the changing seasons and find ways to celebrate them. Whether it's enjoying the blossoms of spring, the warmth of summer, the colors of autumn, or the stillness of winter, let each season remind you of the natural cycles of growth and renewal.
6. Wildlife watching, practicing patience and awe: Observing wildlife in their natural habitat is both thrilling and calming. It teaches patience and cultivates a deep sense of awe for the diversity and resilience of life on Earth. Take up bird watching or visit nature reserves to observe animals in their natural surroundings. Equip yourself with a good pair of binoculars and a field guide. Enjoy the quiet moments of waiting and the excitement of spotting wildlife.
7. Nature-based mindfulness and finding peace in the present moment: Nature provides the perfect backdrop for mindfulness practices. Whether it's meditating by a stream, practicing yoga in a park, or simply sitting quietly under a tree, the natural environment helps ground you in the present moment and fosters inner peace. Incorporate nature-based mindfulness into your routine. Find a quiet spot outdoors and spend a few minutes each day practicing mindfulness. Let the sights, sounds, and smells of nature enhance your practice.
8. Outdoor art and photography and expressing creativity: Art and photography can capture and celebrate nature's beauty. Whether you paint landscapes, sketch flowers, or photograph sunsets, expressing creativity outdoors enhances your appreciation of nature's splendor. Carry a sketchbook or camera on your nature outings. Capture the scenes that inspire you. Create a collection of your outdoor artwork or photographs and share them with others.
The simple healing expansiveness of nature is not reserved for only those who travel to Idaho. It is available to all of us every single day, especially in our ordinary lives. By taking small steps to integrate nature into our daily routines, we can experience its profound ability to heal and rejuvenate, restoring peace and balance. So, step outside, embrace the ordinary wonders of the natural world, and let its healing power of simplicity transform your life in profound ways
Stay well and be happy!
