Creating Your Personal Sanctuary
By, Donna Daacke

Creating that personal sanctuary space within your life as a source of help, relief, or comfort is something that is practiced world wide in various forms and was established in ancient times. More traditionally it may be thought of in terms of where one may go for protection or immunity or where religious figures go to worship and pray. Let’s go back to a broader sense of the word sanctuary and see how it can be relevant in our practice of self care. Personal sanctuary’s come in many forms if we consider it to be our personal space of help, relief, and comfort. It also serves as a place of inspiration, creation, inwardness, clarity, reflection, restoration, the list goes on and on. It is our personal place to go to when we want to be intentional about creating a shift. The kind of shift that takes us out of stress and anxiety, or feeling depleted and dissatisfied. Men and women call it sometimes their workshop, garage or craft room. Some find it in nature, maybe in their kitchen or office maybe it’s even the love of a special activity. It is generally that dedicated space or place that you can go to regularly to intentional bring that shift into your life. My dedicated space is my work studio and I enter it outside of work multiple times daily because it lifts and shifts me every single time. I encourage you to consider locating a designated space that is all yours and make it special.

Tips for creating your sanctuary space.

1.Truly, if you have the space for an entire room wonderful, but if not I’ve seen them in closets, attics or a single spot in a corner in front of a window, in your garage, shed, bedroom, or basement. Ideally anything that offers you privacy and the opportunity to withdraw as often as you choose, this becomes your special space!

2. Bring in elements that have meaning to you, perhaps trinkets from important times in your life and travels. What are your interest, bring it in to remind you of what excites you.

3. Photos remind us of our connection to those we love or places we love and serves to bring us into a space of gratitude.

4. Personalize it, get as funky or not as you choose. If you love that print of Fraser from Seinfeld, it’s your space!

5.Bring in elements of comfort, blankets, mats, pillows, furniture beautiful things that you’re called to that help you to relax.

6. I love elements of nature, stones, shells, plants, wooden elements, fake or real fire, lovely smells. Treasures that you’ve gathered from here and there. Elements that make you want to be in the space.

7. How about some sound elements, music, instruments, tabletop fountains, things that soothe.

8. I love books, journals and words of affirmation that remind me of life’s goodness.

9. Maybe bring in some beautiful prayers beads and or other symbols that help you focus, in your practice of mindfulness!

10. Why not place a vision board or words of direct intention, goals, your mantra, what that you plan to manifest?

Most of all have fun, be creative and enjoy cultivating a practice of self love.
